PhD thesis: Microstructural Criteria for Synseismic Loading and Postseismic Creep - An Example From the Sesia Zone, Western Alps
The microfabric of rocks from the Sesia Zone, Western Alps, has been investigated to gain insight into the processes of syn- and postseismic deformation in the uppermost plastosphere at major earthquakes in the overlying schizosphere. The microstructures imply non-steady state deformation at initially very high differential stresses (>0.5 GPa). Mechanical twinning of jadeite, cataclastic deformation of garnet, and low-temperature plasticity of quartz were followed by deformation dominated by dislocation creep of quartz.
